One of the more common repairs to rings is building up or replacing the prongs, bezels or channels. These are the structures that physically hold and protect your stones. When I refer to “prong(s),” I am referring to all these structures. When prongs are worn away or lost, stones can be damaged or lost. This can be a very emotional event, and can be avoided for the most part. In my opinion one of the more destructive materials to prongs is Bed Sheets, fabric.
We make jewelry, and prongs, out of metals that are fairly soft and malleable. They can be worn away. During the daytime, your rings are “in the air.” Yes, some chemicals can be harmful to metals (a topic for later discussion). And, catching or striking your ring can also be harmful. But, for the most part, while being worn, your jewelry is touching air. Air is not harmful to your jewelry.
Unfortunately, most people do not take their jewelry off at night, while in bed. Bed Sheets ARE harmful to your jewelry! Few people sleep perfectly still, all night. Movement causes the fabric to rub against the metal of your prongs. Over time, night after night, this is like sandpaper wearing away on the metals. Eventually thinning the prongs, causing problems and possibly loss. Repairs become necessary.
The best thing you can do for your jewelry, especially your rings, is to take them off at night! Place a box or dish with a lid on your bedside table or dresser and take your jewelry off and place it in the container before you go to bed. When you wake up in the morning, put your jewelry on and go about your day. If you can add this to your routine, it will greatly extend the lifespan of your jewelry. This along with an annual inspection by a qualified jeweler will help you avoid costly repairs or replacement. Allowing you to enjoy wearing your beautiful jewelry for years to come.
